PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING PROGRAM:
The public health program is designed to produce competent Public Health Nursing Officers (PHNO) capable of planning and implementing Public Health Care services for individuals, families and communities in their places of work, industries, schools and homes.
Objectives
These affect the three domains i.e. Knowledge (Cognitive domain), Skill (psycho-motor domain), Attitude (Affective domain).
Knowledge:
By the end of the training, the students should be knowledgeable in:
- Scientific principles that are basic to Comprehensive Public Health Nursing Practices across all ages in physical and social settings.
- Apply the nursing process in providing comprehensive health care to individuals, families and groups in the community.
- Communication process, group dynamics, and
- Functions of health team, their inter-relatedness and interdependency.
Skills:
The student should be skilled in:
- Identifying health needs, planning and implementing comprehensive health care services to individuals of all ages in the community.
- Applying basic scientific and nursing theories to organize community health education activities.
- Effective communication.
Attitude:
The student should develop attitude that:
- Recognizes the worth and value of the individual through her interpersonal relationship
- Shows sense of responsibility, self, direction and personal growth.
- Shows commitment to the role of the Public Health Nurse and Nurse professional.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Admission Requirements:
The minimum entry requirements into the Higher National Diploma in Public Health Nursing are:
- WASCE/GCE/SSCE/NECO 5 credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and 3baic science subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), not more than two sittings plus either b, c, d, or e below:
- Registered Nursing (RN) certificate.
- Registered Midwife (RM) Certificate or any other basic nursing certificate e.g. Psychiatric Nursing Certificate Plus one year post-qualification experience.
- BNSC candidates from Universities accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN), and WAHEB.
- BNSC candidates from universities outside Nigeria the evidence of verification of certificates and license by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (N&MCN).
Structure and Duration of the Program:
- The structure of the program shall consist of four semesters of classroom contact and Supervised Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
- The duration shall be two years (24 months).
- Candidates with BNSc certificate will start at 400 level/HNDII semester I
- Each semester shall be 12 weeks including tests, examinations and practical.
- SIWES shall be maximum of 6 weeks’ duration.
Award of HND:
Certificates shall be awarded by WAHEB to candidates on the basis of.
- Completion/Defense/Submission of the prescribed course works, project and case study and the Supervised Industrial Work Experience.
- Completion of 92 credit units.
- Successful completion of four semesters of classroom contacts/examinations and pass the National Qualifying Examinations by WAHEB
